No. Wings Institute is a hospitality training institute, not a DG Shipping–approved Maritime Training Institute. We do not issue STCW, CDC, INDoS, or any statutory maritime certificate. Students complete those at DG Shipping–approved institutes of their own choice, and Wings provides written guidance on the process.
No. Final cruise selection is decided by approved recruitment agencies and the cruise lines themselves through their own selection assessments, medicals and interviews. Wings prepares trainees for those selection processes — grooming, soft skills, mock interviews, documentation readiness — but cannot and will not promise placement.
Students who have passed Class 12 (any stream), are between 17–28 years, have or are willing to obtain a valid Indian passport, are medically fit, can swim or are willing to learn basic swimming, and accept the realistic 12–24-month pathway from training to first cruise contract. Hotel management graduates can also take it as a bridge program.
The main 6+6 program runs in person at the Vadodara campus because lab work, grooming, F&B service practicals and mock interviews need a physical environment. Wings also runs a separate 3-month online Cruise Ship Operations Training (theory + orientation) for students who cannot relocate or are layering it on an existing hospitality diploma.
No. Cruise lines typically require Class 12 pass or equivalent, valid passport, age 18+ (21+ for bar service), basic English fluency and full medical fitness. After Class 10, complete Class 12 first, then enrol. Wings counsellors can map a 12th + cruise-prep schedule if you ask.
Cruise batches run alongside Wings’ main intake cycle — typical entries in June, August, October, January and March. Exact upcoming batch dates are confirmed during the counselling call. Smaller cohort sizes for cruise because lab time per trainee is higher.
Wings runs small cruise cohorts (typically 12–20 trainees per batch) so each student gets meaningful lab time in the mock cabin, kitchen and grooming studio, plus one-on-one English-fluency coaching where needed.
No. The course is designed for 12th-pass students with no prior hospitality background. Hotel management diploma holders join as a bridge to cruise readiness. Whatever level you start at, expect to graduate with practical service skills plus interview readiness — actual cruise hiring may still ask for onshore hotel experience first.
Vadodara campus at Alkapuri includes a 24-seat Airbus A330 mock cabin (used cross-discipline for cabin service drills), commercial kitchen lab, grooming and makeover studio, fine-dining mock restaurant, GDS computer lab, and in-house fitness area. Cruise service drills run in the F&B and front-office labs.
Entry hospitality roles: cabin steward / stateroom attendant, assistant waiter, galley utility, retail / boutique associate, photo associate, GSA / guest services, youth activity assistant. Many cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean) prefer 1–2 years of onshore 5-star hotel or restaurant experience before hiring — Wings counselling sets realistic expectations on this.
Cruise ships are floating resorts: hospitality-focused, multicultural crew, hands-on guest service, lower base pay but tips and travel. Merchant Navy operates cargo vessels: industrial environment, longer isolation, higher base pay, deck/engine roles need Marine Engineering or Nautical Science degrees. Cruise hospitality entry needs 12th + soft skills; Merchant Navy needs a much heavier educational and statutory base.

No. STCW, CDC, INDoS, PEME medical, passport, yellow-fever vaccination and C1/D visa fees are all external costs payable directly by the student to the relevant government office or DG Shipping–approved provider. Yes. Wings accepts the cruise fee in 2–3 instalments — typically a confirmation instalment at admission, a mid-course instalment, and a final instalment before OJT. Bajaj Finserv Insta EMI Card is accepted on campus. Bank of Baroda and SBI skill-loan options are also discussed during counselling.
Yes. Bank of Baroda Skill Loan (Gujarat-rooted), SBI Skill Loan and HDFC Credila are commonly used by Wings students. Skill loans under the Govt of India scheme are typically collateral-free up to ₹7.5 lakh, with a 1.5% interest rebate for girl students under PM-Vidyalaxmi. Final approval depends on the bank.
W-NAT (Wings National Aptitude Test) gives ₹10,000–₹25,000 fee waiver after a free MCQ test. PM-Vidyalaxmi central portal scholarships are usable for skill-loan rebates. State-level concessions for girls / single-parent / ex-servicemen children are reviewed at counselling. Wings does not control external scholarship outcomes — we only point you to the official portals.
Most Indian cruise crew recover their full ~₹2 lakh outlay within 2–4 months of their first contract because base + pooled gratuities for entry-level guest-facing roles typically land in the ₹1.2–2 lakh-per-month range (USD-denominated, tax-free under NRI rules) with onboard food and accommodation included.
No hidden fees. Wings publishes the full cruise fee at admission and every external statutory cost in a written TCO sheet. Re-payable items only — e.g. STCW exam retake, uniform alterations, optional refresher modules — are listed in the admission booklet.
Most Wings cruise families fund the program via a combination of Bank of Baroda or SBI skill loan, W-NAT scholarship waiver, and 2–3 instalments. STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers) Basic Safety Training is mandatory under the IMO STCW Convention for anyone working on a passenger ship. It covers fire prevention and firefighting, personal survival techniques, elementary first aid, personal safety and social responsibilities, and security awareness. In India, only DG Shipping–approved Maritime Training Institutes can issue STCW certificates. Wings is not a DG Shipping–approved Maritime Training Institute and does not issue STCW.
At a DG Shipping–approved Maritime Training Institute of the student’s own choice. Most Wings cruise students attend STCW at approved institutes in Mumbai or Goa. Wings shares a current public list of DG Shipping–approved institutes (sourced from dgshipping.gov.in) during counselling and walks students through application logistics — but the student enrols and pays directly.
STCW Basic Safety Training is typically a five-module course completed in 7–10 days at an approved institute. The certificate is valid for five years, after which refresher training is required.
INDoS (Indian National Database of Seafarers) is your unique seafarer identification number issued by the Directorate General of Shipping. Apply directly on dgshipping.gov.in; fee approximately ₹1,416 (₹1,200 + 18% GST). INDoS is required before STCW training begins.
CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate) is your seafarer identity document issued by the Directorate General of Shipping. Apply via the DG Shipping portal after completing STCW + INDoS + PEME medical. Processing typically takes 30–60 days. Indian CDC is valid for ten years. Wings does not issue CDC — the document is issued solely by Government of India.
PEME (Pre-Employment Medical Examination) is a maritime medical conducted only by DG Shipping–approved medical examiners. It covers vision, color blindness, BMI, cardiovascular health, dental, HIV, Hepatitis B and overall fitness. Cost approximately ₹4,000–₹10,000. Validity two years. Wings does not perform medicals.
C1/D is the US transit-plus-crewmember visa, required if your ship calls at any US port. Apply on ustraveldocs.com after receiving your cruise-line Letter of Employment: complete DS-160, pay the US$185 MRV fee, schedule biometrics + interview at Mumbai/Delhi/Chennai/Kolkata/Hyderabad consulate. The US$185 fee is typically reimbursed by the cruise line after you board.
Yes — for MSC, Costa and similar lines departing from Italy, Spain, France or Greece, you will need the C-type Schengen Transit visa for seafarers, applied via BLS or VFS with €30,000 travel medical insurance, CDC and Letter of Employment.
Required for ships visiting Africa or South America. One WHO-approved dose is lifelong-valid per the WHO 2016 update. Cost is approximately ₹300 at government yellow-fever centres or ₹1,500–₹3,000 at private clinics in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot.

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 is the ILO international standard for seafarer rights. Yes. Cruise ships are required to have an onboard complaint procedure under MLC 2006 and the STCW PSSR Amendment 2026. Crew Welfare officers, HR managers and the Captain handle complaints. IMO Resolution MSC.560(108), in force from 1 January 2026, mandates Anti-Harassment, Anti-Sexual-Assault and Anti-Bullying training for all cruise and ferry hotel crew as part of Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) under STCW. All cruise crew must complete the updated module before sign-on; STCW certificates issued after that date include this content.
On ships with significant Indian crew (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC, Norwegian, Disney, Princess), the crew mess typically offers daily Indian vegetarian options — rice, dal, sabzi, roti, paneer, salad. Variety in the crew mess is much narrower than in passenger dining; expect a fixed rotation. Strict vegetarians manage well; very fussy eaters may need to supplement from the crew shop.
Honest answer: Jain availability in the crew mess is best-effort, not guaranteed. The crew mess is a high-volume buffet built for a global workforce; the galley cannot always run a dedicated Jain station. Strict-Jain candidates should disclose dietary needs at interview and during PEME, plan to use the crew shop for snacks, and be prepared to negotiate basic Jain meal prep directly with the galley supervisor on board.
Guest-facing roles in dining may require serving alcohol, beef, pork and seafood to passengers. This is a deal-breaker for strict-Jain or some Hindu candidates.
